Bill Nye, Science Guy, Dispels Poverty Myths (Video)
Here’s Bill Nye doing what he does best: making you smarter. Nye’s video above was posted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to accompany their annual letter in which they dispel myths about global poverty and fight the image of “wasteful” US foreign aid.
Nye contends that contrary to popular myth, the actual amount of US foreign aid is relatively small, (only .8% of our budget, less than a penny of every dollar spent). We’re not talking about building spaceships, and handing out iPads, but instead using those funds to fight/treat simple disease. Nye explains that while most Americans assume wars and natural disasters are the world’s biggest killers, in reality those deaths are “dwarfed” by the amount of people who die by simple, treatable, communicable diseases.
Bottom line, what we do matters. It all comes down to whether you care or not.
