Political Lies Cause Cancer

"God spoke to me last night, and told me to fight AGAINST cures to the beautiful diseases that he created."

Gov. Rick Perry is the front-runner, which means the rest of the GOP field has to bring him down…even if it causes cancer.

Sure, the GOP crew will all band together in a few months and support the very policies they’re opposing now, but for the time being everyone is jumping on Perry for his 2007 Executive Order (quickly overturned by Texas’ State Legislature) that mandated HPV Vaccinations for 11/12 year old girls.

Cervical cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in women, and 90% of cases result from 4 different strains of HPV. The cause is just, but many freaked out because the government should never MANDATE putting a drug in your system. For the record, parents can opt out if they don’t want their kids to take the vaccine. No one tried to force anyone to take the drug against their will; the only thing that was mandated was the program.

It didn’t help at all that Governor Perry’s Chief of Staff, Mike Toomey, worked for Merck (the leading producer of the vaccination, Gardisal). Oh yeah, Perry’s campaign received at least $30,000 from the pharmaceutical giant.

The Governor might have had ulterior motives to push for the Executive Order, but now the very VALID vaccine (recommended by the CDC) is under fire because of the political games.

Take Michele Bachmann and her lying/non-fact checking ways for example. Yesterday, the Congresswoman lied bragged:

I had a mother last night come up to me here in Tampa, Florida, after the debate…She told me that her little daughter took that vaccine, that injection, and she suffered from mental retardation thereafter.

Keep in mind that NO ONE, not a single scientist, has suggested that the vaccination causes mental retardation. Actually no one even uses the term “mental retardation” anymore because its offensive. Be that as it may, Retardation/Autism is an alleged (and debunked) claim against early-childhood vaccinations (like measles); NOT the HPV vaccination administered in 6th grade.

Bachmann has since come out and tried to backtrack away from the controversial claim:

I am not a doctor, I’m not a scientist, I’m not a physician. All I was doing is reporting what this woman told me last night at the debate …

There are two ways to interpret this.

The first is that she met some strange woman and trusted this person’s scientific statement enough to repeat it on TV, and use it as justification for stopping the vaccine. If this was the case, then the Congresswoman is an idiot.

The second option is to recognize that there was no “woman”. Politicians often fabricate the “person who came up to me” to strengthen the validity of their position, and I firmly believe this is what happened with Minnesota’s Finest. Michele blatantly lied and created this “mother”, without doing any fact-checking to see if her made-up story held any water.

Fortunately, I’m not the only one to see through her lies. Bioethicists at the University of Minnesota have so far pledged $11,000 for “proof” of Bachmann’s claim, or for the mother herself to come forward. It’s a safe bet; she doesn’t exist.

Will the Congresswoman suffer any loss to her Presidential campaign because of her blatant lies and inability to quote factual statistics?

Hopefully. Though most of her Idiot followers fans love sound bites (“hey, if she said it on TV, it must be true!”), a poll this week had Bachmann ranked 7th out of the 8 major Republican candidates.

So the rest of America is finally souring on her bullshit, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t harmful anymore.

Taking the “Government Mandate” issue out of the equation, this vaccination is helpful in the fight against HPV and cervical cancer. It has, and will continue to save thousands of lives. It’s usefullness was never in question, just whether or not government should mandate its use.

Unfortunately, now political games and “stories” like the ones told by the lying Congresswoman, will lead some people to honestly believe that the HPV vaccinations like Gardisal cause mental retardation, and they’ll opt to ignore a valuable weapon against the 2nd leading cause of death of young women.

Nice job, Congresswoman. Nice Job.
