Devastating Storms

A record 160+ twisters were reported during the storms that ripped through 7 states and killed more than 300 people. Wednesday alone was actually the deadliest day of tornadoes since 1974.

A monster, mile-wide tornado tore through Tuscaloosa, possibly the largest ever in Alabama. Tuscaloosa and Birmingham look to have been hit the worst, with large parts of both areas flattened or virtually erased, and more than 30 reported dead in each city. More than a million are left without power, and a state of emergency has been declared in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Virginia.

To make matters worse, the entire area has to prepare for what could be the worst Mississippi River overflow in a generation if rains persist.

The damage is devastating, and most of these states were already in financial despair. Federal help will be forthcoming, let’s just hope they don’t bungle this like Katrina. Obama travels to the damaged areas today to do whatever it is Politicians think they do after these things.

Playstation Network Hacked

In what is being billed as the largest information heist ever, more than 77 million users had their information hacked on the Playstation Network. Sony claims all financial information on the network is coded, so probably won’t be a danger there, but enough other information was stolen to give many pause.

The big question is, why did Sony even announce the heist? Many companies would have kept this hushed in fear of scaring investors and customers. Is Sony’s honesty refreshing, or stupid? Hacking occurs all the time. I’ve said it before, there is no such thing as secure information anymore–there is ALWAYS someone who can get it.

I’m just pissed because now someone knows I suck on all the Call of Duty side-missions.

NFL Lockout

So draft night last night gave us hope, but there are a couple more developments in the NFL. On Friday, teams and players can begin “limited operations”. This means players can report, work out, mingle with coaches and trainers, and teams can finally distribute play-books and schedule workouts. Keep in mind this is is all just a mitigating move to get a semblance of a season while trying to hammer out a deal between the players and the League.

So this is good, but still no Free Agency, although we were teased with it earlier in the week. The District Court specified Free Agency was the main factor in the decision to end the lockout, but the League is waiting to institute it until they figure out all the details in the official off-season scheduling. The League claims this will be done soon, and when it is we can start seeing some player trades and signings.

Also at issue is what rules to play by while the deal is hammered out. Its likely they will revert to 2010 rules for governing, but there could be a couple tweaks by owners considering it was a non-salary-cap year and I think I heard owners don’t exactly like shelling out the dough.

Avengers

The much anticipated movie began filming this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For those of you that don’t know, The Avengers is a Marvel Comics super-team bringing together all the favorites in a rare cinematic undertaking. Marvel did something fantastic when it decided to sign the superstars to the franchises with the foresight of bringing them all together for one (or ten) huge movie. You can pretty much bank that they’ll add Spidey and Wolverine to this bunch down the road.

Here’s a look at some of the cast: Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Samuel L Jackson (Nick Fury).

They haven’t really leaked too much of the plot yet, but I’m sure it centers around a big crisis, a couple bad guys, and needing to save the world. Sorry for the spoiler.

Royal Wedding

Someone’s getting married today. I really know nothing about it. She’s hot, he’s goofy looking but rich. I think Seinfeld said it best a couple weeks ago:

“It’s a circus act…You know, it’s a dress-up…It’s a classic English thing of lets play dress-up. Let’s pretend that these are special people. OK, we’ll all pretend that – that’s what theatre is. That’s why the British have the greatest theatre in the world. They love to dress up and they love to play pretend … These aren’t special people – it’s fake outfits, fake phony hats and gowns.”

I don’t know if you believe this, but that actually pissed some Brits off! Congrats to the girl for becoming a Princess though. I have two nieces, so I know that’s kind of a big deal.
